My brother, I am a constant reader of my Bible, and I soon found that what I was taught to believe (by Darby's doctrine) did not always agree with what my Bible said. I came to see that I must either part company with John Darby, or my precious Bible, and I chose to cling to my Bible and part from Mr. Darby." - George Mueller, a contemporary and one time supporter of Darby

Beyond all else Billy Graham studies the Bible, the supreme authority for his belief and action. Every day he reads five Psalms, covering the psalter in a month, and one chapter of Proverbs, the book that "shows us how to relate our own lives to our fellow men." He reads through a Gospel each week, using commentaries and modern translations, and constantly returns to the Acts of the Apostles. He annotates throughout the Bible. "Sometimes His word makes such an impact on me that I have to put the Bible down and walk around for a few moments to catch my breath." He learns great stretches by heart.

THE INDISPENSABLE STRATEGY OF BIBLE MEMORIZATION How shall we use the Word of God to fight for joy? The first answer I have given is to read it with plan and regularity. The next answer I give is to memorize verses and paragraphs and chapters and even whole books of the Bible. The older you get, the harder it is. I am fifty-eight as I write this, and I still invest significant time in memorizing Scripture, but it is much harder now than it used to be. It takes far more repetition to make the words stick to this aging brain. But I would not give it up any more than a miser would give up his stash of gold. I feel the same way Dallas Willard does when he says: Bible memorization is absolutely fundamental to spiritual formation. If I had to choose between all the disciplines of the spiritual life, I would choose Bible memorization, because it is a fundamental way of filling our mind with what it needs. This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth. That’s where you need it! How does it get in your mouth? Memorization.

I have a fundamental belief in the Bible as the Word of God, written by men who were inspired. I study the Bible daily. Opposition to godliness is atheism in profession and idolatry in practice. Atheism is so senseless and odious to mankind that it never had many professors.

Ernest Sandeen the historian explains some of the reasons for its popularity, The Scofield Reference Bible combined an attractive format of typography, paraphrasing, notes, and cross references with the theology of Darbyite dispensationalism. The book has thus been subtly but powerfully influential in spreading those views among hundreds of thousands who have regularly read that Bible and who often have been unaware of the distinction between the ancient text and the Scofield interpretation.

"The Message of Prayer" Buy from www.amazon.co.uk or www.amazon.com
Tim Chester
Much of the devotional literature on prayer is focused on those things which help us to pray - posture, exercises, liturgies, habits. But, while they may be helpful, none of them is necessary. The focus of the Bible is instead on Christ and his sufficiency. There is nothing we can do to make our prayers more effective before God. Any such notions are a return to paganism - it is to suppose that we can manipulate or placate God. As Ronald Dunn puts it, the floor of the throne room is sprinkled, 'not with the sweat of my good works, but with the of his sacrifice'. The 'posture' that the Bible commends is a humble and contrite heart

A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealers showroom, and knowing that his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted. As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather bound Bible, with the young man’s name embossed in gold. Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money you give me a BIble?" and stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible. Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and wonderful family, but realized his father was very old and thought perhaps he should go to him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. But before he could make arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things. When he arrived at his father’s house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his father’s important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. His father has carefully underlined a verse, Matthew 7:11, "And if ye, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Heavenly Father which is in heaven, give to those who ask Him?" As he read those words, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealers name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words....PAID IN FULL. How many times have we missed God’s blessings because they are not packaged as we expected?

The prince of Grenada, an heir to the Spanish throne, was sentenced to life in solitary confinement in Madrids ancient prison. It was dreadful and dreary, but he was allowed one book - the Bible. - So he read it for the 33 years he sat in prison - Hundreds of times - When he finally died, they found notes scribbled in the stone - It went like this: - Psalm 118:8 is the middle verse of the Bible - Ezra 7:21 contains all the letters of the alphabet - Esther 8:9 is the longest verse in this book - No word or name is found having more than 6 syllables With a distancing eye, he spent his whole life reading words, but never heard God speak - Never attuned himself to hear Gods gentle whisper - What a waste!

Preachers are therefore like forest rangers. The ranger knows the terrain and helps people to learn how to navigate it. In a similar way, a preacher is meant to learn the terrain of reality as it relates to God, people, places and personal conscience. The Bible is the map that one needs to amke true contact. With that map, the preacher introduces reality to people and in essence says: "Now when you come across this kind of path, here is what you need to know in order to walk the path wisely." The map has something to say regarding every path available in this landscape of "all things" withs it varying kinds and capacities.
