After watching sales fall off for three straight months at Kentucky Fried Chicken, the Colonel called the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church to ask a favor. "Is it possible to change just one word in the Lord's Prayer from 'give us this day our daily bread' to 'give us this day our daily chicken?' 'If so, I would donate a million dollars to the PC (USA). The Moderator replies, "I'm sorry, that's sacred scripture, I couldn't possibly change the words!" "Well, could it be done for, let's say, five million?" "I'm sorry, I must refuse, it's the Lord's Prayer and the words can't be changed." The Colonel thought about his declining sales and said, "This is my final offer, if you will change the words from 'give us this day our daily bread' to 'give us this day our daily chicken'’, I will give ten million dollars to the Presbyterian Church." The Moderator said, "Let me get back to you," and called together all the members of the General Assembly Council and said, "I have some good news, and some bad news. The good news is that we have a ten million dollar gift to the church, the bad news is that we have lost the Wonder Bread account."

The best praying man is the man who is most believingly familiar with the promises of God. After all, prayer is nothing but taking God's promises to Him and saying, "Do as You have said." Prayer is the promise utilized. Prayer not based on a promise has no true foundation

Life is war. That's not all it is. But it is always that. Our weakness in prayer is owing largely to our neglect of this truth. Prayer is primarily a wartime walkie-talkie for the mission of the Church as it advances against the powers of darkness and unbelief. It is not surprising that prayer malfunctions when we try to make it a domestic intercom to call upstairs for more comforts for the den. God has given us prayer as a wartime walkie-talkie so that we can call headquarters for everything we need as the kingdom fo God advances in the world. Prayer gives us the significance of front-line forces, and gives God the glory of a limitless Provider. The one who gives the power gets the glory. Thus prayer safeguards the supremacy fo God in missions while linking is with endless grace for every need.

I start with the truism that each Christian\'s prayer life, like every good marriage, has in it common factors about which one can generalise and also uniqueness which no other Christian\'s prayer life will quite match. You are you and I am I, and we must each find our own way with God.

Let us give ourselves to the word and prayer. Let our insights into Scripture come through prayer; let our preaching of the Word be bathed in prayer; and let the Word motivate our praying because the Word itself stirs our faith as we pray.

We must simply seek for ourselves and for our people a wartime mentality. Otherwise the Biblical teaching about the urgency of prayer, and the vigilance of prayer and the danger of abandoning prayer will make no sense and find no resonance in our hearts. Until we feel the desparation of a bombing raid, or the thril of a new strategic offensive for the Gospel, we will not pray in the spirit of Jesus.

Make your life -- especially the life of your study -- a life of constant communion with God in prayer. The aroma of God will not linger on a person who does not linger in the presence of God.... We are called to the ministry of the word and prayer, because without prayer the God of our studies will be the unfrightening and uninspiring God of insipid academic gamesmanship.

Prayer is for the glory of the Father. Jesus had taught this to the disciples before he left. "Whatever you do in my name, I will do it, that the father may b glorified in the Son". (John 14:13). In other words, the ultimate purpose of prayer is that the Father be glorified. The other side of this purpose comes out in John 16:24. Jesus says, "Till now you have not asked for anything in my name; ask and you will receive that your joy may be full." The purpose of prayer is that our joy may be full. the unity of these two goals - the glory of God and the joy of his people - is preserved in the act of prayer.

I Believe that prayer is the measure of the man, spiritually, in a way that nothing else is, so that how we pray is as important as question as we can ever face.
