Carson clarifies the gospel from 1 Cor 15:1-19 with eight summarizing words: 1. Christological: The gospel centers on the person and work (the life, death, and resurrection) of Jesus Christ. 2. theological: The gospel tells us that sin is first and foremost an offense against God and that salvation is first to last the action of God, not our own. 3. biblical: The gospel is essentially the message of the whole Bible. 4. apostolic: The gospel is passed on to us by Jesus' disciples as authoritative eyewitnesses. 5. historical: The gospel is not philosophy or advice on how to find God, but rather news of what God has done in history to find and save us. 6. personal: The gospel must be personally believed and appropriated. 7. universal: The gospel is for every tongue, tribe, people, and individual. 8. eschatological: The gospel includes the good news of the final transformation, not just the blessings we enjoy in this age.

We cannot pray for, dwell in, or serve the city well if we do not bring the savior and the gospel of the city which is so needed. How can we be all about the city without the gospel. If you are all for the city without the gospel, you hate the city. We have to "be the gospel", "do the gospel", and "tell the gospel". We have to tell the gospel. Do not miss this. Please do not revert back to the liberal theology that epitomizes so many high churches that we just need to "be the gospel". "Bring Jesus and bring justice, but please do not just bring justice and think you brought Jesus." You will be affirmed when you bring "justice", you will be condemned when you bring "Jesus". We are called to do both, despite the reaction.

If there's anything in life that we should be passionate about, it's the gospel. And I don't mean passionate about sharing it with others. I mean passionate about thinking about it, dwelling on it, rejoicing in it, allowing it to color the way we look at the world. Only one thing can be of first importance to each of us. And only the gospel ought to be.

The gospel has been described as a pool in which a toddler can wade and yet an elephant can swim. It is both simple enough to tell to a child and profound enough for the greatest minds to explore. Indeed, even angels never tire of looking into it (1 Peter 1:12). Humans are by no means angels, however, so rather than contemplating it, we argue about it.

The integration of the historical ministry of God's Son (on the cross) with the contemporary ministry of his Spirit (in our hearts) is one of the most wholesome and satisfying features of the Gospel.

What must you do if you lack the humility, love, joy, and confidence you need to face the life issues before you? You should not try to move on past the gospel to "more advanced" principles. Rather, you should shake yourself until more of the gospel "coins" drop and more of the fruit of the Spirit comes out. Until you do that, despite your sound doctrine you will be as selfish, scared, oversensitive, insensitive, and undisciplined as everyone else

Gospel in Acts 1. The apostles declare that wicked people are responsible for Jesus’ death. 2. God raised Jesus from the dead. 3. God offers forgiveness to the guilty if they repent and believe. 4. Those who repent and receive forgiveness glorify and praise God. Excellent table too!

What we need to do is change evangelism from "me doing the gospel thing with my mates" to "us doing the gospel thing with my (soon to be our) mates." It's a simple transition, but it makes a world of difference.

The therapeutic gospel is a false gospel and an enemy of mission for many reasons. First, it does not call me to love God and my neigbour, but instead to love myself. Second it does not call me to God's mission but rather calls God to my mission. Third it does not call be to be part of the Church to serve God's mission, but instead to use the Church to make me a better person. Fourth it does not call me to use my spiritual gift(s) to build up the Church but rather to actualise my full potential. Fifth, it takes pride, which Augustine called the mother of all sins and repackages it as self esteem, the maidservant of all virtue.
