Atonement is about right relationships. Its past speaks of brokenness, alienation and the death of love. Its present sees restoration, healing and wholeness. Its future holds hope for deepeniong friendship and mutual confidence.

This is one of those books where the theological position it contains is popular and helpful but the book itself isn\'t often referred to. Ladd helped us understand the kingdom of God in terms of \'the now but not yet\'. In other words, the rule of God has indeed broken in as a result of Jesus\' coming, but is not fully or perfectly realised. The full impact of God\'s absolute reign comes later, after Jesus\' return. So we expect to see breakthrough now but understand we don\'t have the fullness of God\'s power yet. Probably for many it was John Wimber who introduced this teaching in terms of having a healthy understanding of how we can expect God to heal, but yet not everyone is healed. We\'re in the in-between stage of Kingdom realisation and so should keep clear of the two dangers of unbelief at the one extreme (not expecting healing) and unreality at the other (no Christian should ever be sick or die of sickness, or not be healed when prayed for)

Today it is Spiderman, but back in the 1940s, Captain Marvel was the comic book hero that captured the attention of the nation. Poor, orphaned Billy Bateson could turn himself into Captain Marvel just by uttering one magical word – Shazam! Shazam was actually an acronym stating all the powers Bateson received when he transformed into Captain Marvel. It stood for Solomon’s wisdom, Hercules’ strength, Achilles’ courage, Zeus’ powers, Atlas’ stamina, and Mercury’s speed. The power of the Holy Spirit goes far beyond the minor gifts granted to Captain Marvel. The Holy Spirit is Christ alive in us. All the works that the disciples had seen Jesus do – preaching, teaching, inspiring, comforting, healing, increasing of resources (like the loaves and fishes) – they would be able to do. Jesus’ presence had to depart in order for his power to descend.

Jungle Aviation and Radio Service (JAARS), the flying department of Wycliffe Bible Translators--had flown thousands of hours over a 25 year span without one fatal accident before April 7, 1972. On that day, a Piper Aztec lost its right engine and crashed in Papua New Guinea, killing all seven persons aboard. The Aztec had just rolled out of the Wycliffe maintenance hangar the day before following a 100 hour inspection. The chief mechanic was stunned when he heard the news of the crash. Reviewing in his mind each step he had performed in inspecting that right engine, he suddenly recoiled in horror. He remembered that he had been interrupted while tightening a fuel line and had never returned to finish the job! That faulty connection had allowed raw fuel to spray out and catch fire while the Aztec was in flight. The mechanic's guilt at being responsible for the deaths of his companions crushed him. For days he did not know what to do. The other mechanics tried to help him, as did his own family. But when the family of Doug Hunt, the pilot who was killed in the accident, was preparing to return to their home in New Zealand, the mechanic knew he had to see them, talk with them and beg their forgiveness. He could barely get out the words as he sobbed in their presence. "That hand there," he said, looking at his right hand, "took Doug's life." Glennis Hunt, Doug's widow, embraced him. "Glennis sat by me and held the hand that took her husband's life," he later wrote, "and another JAARS pilot sat on my other side with a demonstration of love, comfort, and forgiveness. That was the most significant first step in the healing process."

I think it would be fair to say also from this text that you shouldn't bend your mind too much trying to label your spiritual gift before you use it. That is, don't worry about whether you can point to prophecy, or teaching, or wisdom, or knowledge, or healing, or miracles, or mercy, or administration, etc., and say, "That's mine." The way to think is this: The reason we have spiritual gifts is so that we can strengthen other people's faith; here is someone whose faith is in jeopardy; how can I help him? Then do or say what seems most helpful, and if the person is helped, then you may have discovered one of your gifts. If you warned him of the folly of his way and he repented, then perhaps you have the gift of "warning." If you took a walk with her and said you knew what she was going through and lifted her hope, then perhaps you have the gift of "empathy.'' If you had them over to your home when they were new and lonely, then perhaps you have the gift of "hospitality." We must not get hung up on naming our gifts. The thing to get hung up on is, "Are we doing what we can do to strengthen the faith of the people around us? I really believe that the problem of not knowing our spiritual gifts is not a basic problem. More basic is the problem of not desiring very much to strengthen other people's faith. Human nature is more prone to tear down than it is to build up. The path of least resistance leads to grumbling and criticism and gossip, and many there be that follow it. But the gate is narrow and the way is strewn with obstacles which leads to edification and the strengthening of faith. So the basic problem is becoming the kind of person who wakes up in the morning, thanks God for our great salvation, and then says, "Lord, O how I want to strengthen people's faith today. Grant that at the end of this day somebody will be more confident of your promises and more joyful in your grace because I crossed his path." The reason I say becoming this kind of person is more basic than finding out your spiritual gift is that when you become this kind of person, the Holy Spirit will not let your longings go to waste. He will help you find ways to strengthen the faith of others, and that will be the discovery of your gifts. So let's apply ourselves to becoming the kind of people more and more who long to strengthen each other's faith.
