If we are going to dwell and plant an urban church we need to realize that the Kingdom of God does not show up when you and your church show up. Actually, it showed up with Jesus. Do not assume that the kingdom of God arrives with your arrival. How arrogant of you. The kingdom of God has already broken in long before you.

Jesus' Kingdom is not about geography The kingdom would , in inaugurated in contrast to their expectations, spiritual in nature, international in membership and gradual in expansion. And the expansion of this kingdom throughout the world would specifically require their exile from the Land. They must turn their backs on Jerusalem and their hopes of ruling there with Jesus in order to fulfil their new role as ambassadors of the Kingdom. (Matt 20:20-28; 2 Corinthians 5:20-21). The Acts of the Apostles suggests that they needed something of a kick start to get going. It is only when the Christians in Jerusalem experience persecution following the death of Stephen and are scattered that they begin to proclaim the Gospel to others (Acts 8:1-4). The church was sent out into the world to make disciples of all nations but never told to return. Instead Jesus promises to be with them wherever they are in the world. (Matt 29:18-20)

It must also have been the idea in the minds of the disciples, when, before the ascension, they asked, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" Acts 1:6. John Calvin comments, "There are as many mistakes in this question as there are words." Jesus reply shows him correcting not only their concept of time but also their view of ministry. 7He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:7-8 The nature of the kingdom of God now re-defines the meaning of chosenness. The extension of the kingdom of God throughout the world necessitates their exile from the land and indeed the turning of their backs on Jerusalem for ever. They are sent out into the world but never told to return.

Before we can even engage in the mission of the Church we have to fight against "The delight in riches" and "desire for other things". We must fight to cherish the kingdom above all other things - that is our first and constant battle. That is the "fight of faith". Then when we have some experience in that basic battle we join the fight to commend the kingdom to all nations.

This is one of those books where the theological position it contains is popular and helpful but the book itself isn\'t often referred to. Ladd helped us understand the kingdom of God in terms of \'the now but not yet\'. In other words, the rule of God has indeed broken in as a result of Jesus\' coming, but is not fully or perfectly realised. The full impact of God\'s absolute reign comes later, after Jesus\' return. So we expect to see breakthrough now but understand we don\'t have the fullness of God\'s power yet. Probably for many it was John Wimber who introduced this teaching in terms of having a healthy understanding of how we can expect God to heal, but yet not everyone is healed. We\'re in the in-between stage of Kingdom realisation and so should keep clear of the two dangers of unbelief at the one extreme (not expecting healing) and unreality at the other (no Christian should ever be sick or die of sickness, or not be healed when prayed for)

Jesus knew that it was the night of his betrayal and that the very next morning he would suffer on a cross for the sins of the world. He wouid from out viewpoint, have had every reason to be preoccupied with his imminent sufferings. Yet Jesus took time to tend to a duty -washing the feet of guests - that was usually left to the lowest servant in a household. He did this with full awareness of his own divine dignity. It was not in spite of his greatness but because His greatness that Jesus served his disciples on that evening. His own attitude toward servanthood, that true greatness in the Kingdom of God consists not in position or authority but in serving one another. If we are to master the scriptures principles of true biblical fellowship we must master this one: True greatness in the Kingdom of Heaven consists in serving one another. Jesus said 'Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servants' Matthew 20:26

There must be a transition from seating to sending. The impact of kingdom growth is more important as a measure. Missional churches give themselves away rather than serve their own needs

Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin, and desire nothing but God, and I care not a straw whether they be clergymen or laymen; such alone will shake the gates of hell and set up the kingdom of heaven on earth.
