In Philippians Paul tells us as Christians to, "Do all things without grumbling or disputing..." Often we wonder how to shine as a light in the world and here is one way that is very clear. We are in the midst of a world that complains all the time. Sadly the world seems to complain about every situation. If it has been a fine week for weather we hear a complaint about how it is bound to rain because the weekend is coming! People complain about the buses and trains being late, about the way the office is run, about the management, about people. We constantly hear this dull, grating noise of complaint and ingratitude. The Church shines as a light in the world, not only by proclaiming Jesus in the streets, but by doing all things without grumbling and complaining. This is enough to make you shine today! Remember to keep shining! Encourage one another all the time - husbands, wives and parents. We must stop one another in our tracks and say, "Remember you're a Christian! Remember to do all things without grumbling or complaining!"... There are two languages in the world: the language of grumbling and the language of thanksgiving, and there are some who live in between and can speak both. Don't live on the border learning a foreign language - be a true native of Zion!

It is instructive to remember how Paul described his coming to Corinth: "I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling..." We can be certain he was not afraid of the Corinthians. He was arriving in Corinth, the second most intellectual city of the ancient world, having come from Athens, the most intellectual city. If he was tempted to be clever, if ever he was tempted to preach with Greek wisdom and use the kind of arguments that would appeal to philosphers, it would be in Athens and it would be in Corinth. He had already preached on the Aeropagus in Athens to one group of philosphers (see Acts 17:22); now as he arrived at the next most intellectual city in the ancient world, he made a crucial decision about the manner of his preaching: "I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. He resolved not to come with "plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and power". He was anxious to avoid looking learned or philosphical.
