What is preaching? Logic on fire! Eloquent reason!... Preaching is theology coming through a man who is on fire... What is preaching? To give men and women a sense of God and His presence. Martyn Lloyd Jones

Preaching against culture--as we often do--is like preaching against someone's house. It's just where they live. There is good in it, and there is bad in it--preach discernement, not culture condemnation

God never sends revival without touching the preachers first and when it comes their preaching is changed in bothe style and content. People begin to preach with a power that they never had before, and, at the same time, their preaching ceases to be man-centred and focuses instead on God. Then it begins to pierce people's hearts

A gospel which merely says "Come to Jesus" and offers Him as a friend, and offers a marvellous new life, without convincing of son, is not New Testament evangelism. (The essence of evangelism id to start by preaching the Law; and it because the Law has not been preached that we have had so much superficial evangelism.) True evangelism ... must always start by preaching the Law

Preachers are therefore like forest rangers. The ranger knows the terrain and helps people to learn how to navigate it. In a similar way, a preacher is meant to learn the terrain of reality as it relates to God, people, places and personal conscience. The Bible is the map that one needs to amke true contact. With that map, the preacher introduces reality to people and in essence says: "Now when you come across this kind of path, here is what you need to know in order to walk the path wisely." The map has something to say regarding every path available in this landscape of "all things" withs it varying kinds and capacities.

Lloyd Jnes quoting revivalist Jonathan Edwards to this effect, who had said "the main benefit obtained by preaching is the impression made upon the mind at the time, and not by an effect that arises afterwards by remembrance of what was delivered." Edwards maintained that the greatest benefit of preaching was the impact it had on the person at the time when they heard it, as opposed to looking back ofver notes in order to recall what had been said. People will most often be ale to recall specific events if they have strong emotions attached to them. Likewise, when people think back to how they felt when someone preached a powerful word, then that message has another opportunity to work in them for transformation.
