Prayer is for the glory of the Father. Jesus had taught this to the disciples before he left. "Whatever you do in my name, I will do it, that the father may b glorified in the Son". (John 14:13). In other words, the ultimate purpose of prayer is that the Father be glorified. The other side of this purpose comes out in John 16:24. Jesus says, "Till now you have not asked for anything in my name; ask and you will receive that your joy may be full." The purpose of prayer is that our joy may be full. the unity of these two goals - the glory of God and the joy of his people - is preserved in the act of prayer.

The land had served its purpose, like an airport runway, to provide a temporary residence for the ancestors of the Messiah, David's greater Son; to host the incarnation, a home for the Lord Jesus Christ; and so be made ever holy through the shedding of his innocent blood upon it. The land provided a base, a strategic launch pad for God's rescue mission, from which the apostles would take the good news of Jesus Christ to the world. In the New Testament, the land, like an old wineskin, had served its purpose. It was and remains, irrelevant to God's ongoing redemptive purposes for the world

God doesn\'t bless us so that we can tear down our old barns and build bigger ones. Believers sometimes misunderstand the purpose of God\'s blessings and drown in their own gravy.

The Church exists for nothing else but to draw men into Christ, to make them little Christs. If they are not doing that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself, are simply a waste of time. God became Man for no other purpose

In its true and proper work and purpose it humbles a man and prepares him - if he uses the Law correctly - to yearn and seek for grace.
