The state of ourminds often causes the greatest trouble. The Psalmist asked himself: "Why are you so downcast O my sould? And why are you so disquieted within me?" (Psalm 42:5,11) The centering of your thoughts by faith on the glory of Christ will bring peace and quiet to the disturbed and disordered mind.

If you look back across the history of the Christian Church, you immediately find that the story of the Church has not been a straight line, a level record of achievement. The history of the Church has been a history of ups and downs. It is there to be seen on the very surface. When you read the history of the past you find that there have been periods in the history of the Church when she has been full of life, and vigour, and power. The statistics prove that people crowded to the house of God, whole numbers of people who were anxious and eager to belong to the Christian Church. Then the Church was filled with life, and she had great power; the Gospel was preached with authority, large numbers of people were converted regularly, day by day, and week by week. Christian people delighted in prayer. You did not have to whip them up to prayer meetings, you could not keep them away. They did not want to go home, they would stay all night praying. The whole Church was alive and full of power, and of vigour, and of might. And men and women were able to tell of rich experiences of the grace of God, visitations of his Spirit, a knowledge of the love of God that thrilled them, and moved them, and made them feel that it was more precious than the whole world. And, as a consequence of all that, the whole life of the country was affected and changed

Quitness here (1 Tim 2:11-3:5) does not mean total silence, but rather a peaceable demeanor that is also required of men in Titus 2:2

Cooperate as much as possible on a local level. If we are going to reach the cities for Christ it will not be solitary churches and solitary denominations. Church planters love to claim the uniqueness of their church plant. If in the process of proclaiming the uniqueness of your church plant you denigrate others who are about the same work of the gospel, you should be ashamed. It is a necessity that we be biblically faithful, culturally relevant, and counter-culturally helpful.

The answer to abusive authority is not an absence of authority but rather righteous authority that rules under the authority of Scripture and Jesus. The right response to abusive authority can be calling the Church and even the police. Sadly it is all too common that people in the Church are guilty of the sin of Diotrephes, "who like to put himself first, and does not acknowledge our authority"

A Sunday School teacher challenged her children to take some time on Sunday afternoon to write a letter to God. They were to bring their letter back the following Sunday. One little boy wrote, "Dear God, we had a good time at church today. Wish you could have been there." After a church service on Sunday Morning, a young boy suddenly announced to his mother, "Mom, I've decided to become a minister when I grow up." "That's okay with us, but what made you decide that?" "Well," said the little boy, "I'll have to go to church on Sunday anyway, and I figure it will be more fun to stand up and yell than to sit and listen!"
